Employee Spotlight: Joe Glenn

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Springmaid Mountain Retreat is more than just a getaway—it’s a place rich in history, nature and community. At the heart is Joe Glenn, the General Manager who has been shaping the guest experience for nearly two decades.

A Local with Deep Roots

Joe grew up in Mitchell County, the same region that Springmaid Mountain calls home. A graduate of Mitchell High School and Mayland Community College, his career began in a different industry—working as a CNC Programmer for Henredon Furniture for 18 years. After earning his CDL with a Hazardous Tanker Endorsement through Caldwell Community College’s Truck Driving School, Joe’s career took him on the road as a long-haul driver for Tyson Foods. But eventually, the mountains called him home.

A Journey to Springmaid Mountain

Joe first joined Springmaid Mountain in 2006 as a part-time trail guide, where he quickly fell in love with the property’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. His passion for the land and dedication to guest experience led him to become the Barn Manager before being promoted to General Manager in the spring of 2010. For the past 15 years, Joe has worked to ensure that visitors experience the same tranquility and charm that first drew him in.

More Than Just a Retreat

For Joe, Springmaid Mountain is a place like no other. “We have mountain views, small streams, waterfalls, fishing ponds, the North Toe River, history—including remnants of an old railroad bed and an animal farm—and a vast array of wildlife,” he shares. “It’s truly a unique property.”

Joe’s favorite part about Springmaid Mountain? “The quiet, the peace, the tranquility. I wish everyone could experience living here and see how peaceful it is.”

Beyond the serene environment, what Joe treasures most is the connection with guests. “I love meeting new people and hearing their stories—why they come here, the memories they have of growing up and visiting Springmaid Mountain with family over the years. Some guests call, and I already know what cabin they like to stay in and why they’re coming—whether it’s for a family reunion or an annual visit.”

A Legacy Worth Knowing

Joe also hopes more people learn about the deeper story of Springmaid Mountain. “I wish everyone knew why Leroy Springs & Company purchased this property and what it meant to Mrs. Close and now to her family.” That history, intertwined with a commitment to preservation and hospitality, is what makes this retreat so special.

When he’s not overseeing the daily operations of Springmaid Mountain, Joe enjoys traveling. This year, he’s off to Las Vegas in April and cruising to Alaska in August.

Experience the Magic of Springmaid Mountain

Springmaid Mountain continues to be a place where guests can escape the hustle of daily life and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, an outdoor adventure or a nostalgic return to a beloved getaway, Springmaid Mountain welcomes you—just as Joe has welcomed so many with his warm hospitality and deep appreciation for this special place.
