Employee Spotlight: Kaitlyn Hermans

While Springmaid Mountain Retreat is known for its breathtaking views, cozy cabins, and peaceful riverside setting, it’s also home to a dynamic equestrian program led by someone who lives and breathes mountain adventure—Kaitlyn Hermans.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Kaitlyn’s passion for horses began early, trading barn chores for riding lessons and eventually becoming a working student for a competitive coach. When a serious riding accident altered her course, Kaitlyn shifted gears—heading west to Prescott College in Arizona where she earned a double major in Environmental Studies and Wilderness Leadership.

After college, Kaitlyn brought her expertise to the North Carolina mountains, building and managing a successful equestrian program at Camp Grier for eight years before joining Springmaid Mountain in August 2022.

As Equestrian Program Manager, Kaitlyn oversees a herd of 13 Quarter horses and leads guided trail rides year-round. “Each day starts by rounding up the herd from pasture—sometimes easier said than done, given how spread out they are,” she laughs. “Then it’s feeding, grooming, tacking and hitting the trails.”

Those trails? They wind through forested hillsides, splash across the North Toe River, and reveal seasonal wonders like blooming mountain laurel in spring and stunning foliage each fall. “The horseback rides here are something special,” Kaitlyn says. “There’s nothing like crossing the river on horseback. It feels like a scene out of an old western, and both riders and horses absolutely love it.”

Beyond the barn, Kaitlyn encourages guests to explore all corners of the property, including booking a stay at one of her favorite hidden gems. The Overlook is the cabin with the biggest wow factor. It’s perched on a ridge with sunrise and sunset views. You can see for miles—truly one of the best spots on the mountain.”

Though she’s quick to say she doesn’t play favorites with her horses, Kaitlyn keeps a close eye on the youngest members of the herd—Boots, Woody and Jaz—who are growing into their roles on the trail. “We ask a lot of our horses, and they never fail to rise to the occasion. They’re intelligent, hard-working and full of personality. I’m lucky to work with them every day.”

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or trying horseback riding for the first time, Kaitlyn and her team ensure a welcoming and memorable experience. “Springmaid Mountain is approachable, affordable and full of charm,” she says. “The cabins are simple and comfortable, the trails are gorgeous and it’s the kind of place that helps you slow down and reconnect—with nature, with family or even with yourself.”

Ready to ride? Add a guided horseback ride to your next cabin stay and see Springmaid Mountain from the saddle. From mountaintop overlooks to river crossings, you’ll experience the retreat in a whole new way—led by someone who knows every trail, hoofbeat and hidden view by heart.
